Situated on 8 pastoral acres with 290 feet of lakefront on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, it has both pasture and a lush private forest with a gentle 500 foot trail leading to a creek and sandy beach. The area, known as The Kootenays, is the undiscovered jewel of western Canada. Blessed with fresh air, temperate weather, pristine rivers and lakes, as well as stunning scenery, it offers the perfect getaway from urban life. Fjord-like Kootenay Lake, the largest natural lake in Canada, is 80 miles long and surrounded on all sides by mountains. Wildlife abounds, including eagles, deer, elk, wild turkeys, and huge rainbow trout.

The nearby heritage town of Nelson was the location for the 1987 film, "Roxanne," starring Steve Martin and Darryl Hannah. Originally a prosperous mining town at the turn of the 20th century, Nelson retains a storybook look and a rich cultural life unexpected in a community of under 10,000. Take an architectural walking tour, or try "ArtWalk" in the many galleries and craft boutiques showing the work of fine Kootenay artists. Once the smallest city in the British Empire with its own streetcar line, Nelson is now rejuvenating the streetcar in a picturesque ride along the lakefront.
Harrop Creel Cottage is not far from Whitewater Ski Area, British Columbia's best-kept secret, where there are virtually no lines and the runs go on forever. "Ski Canada" rated Whitewater as Best Deeps, Best Bowls, and Best Glades. "Powder Magazine" declared it among the best powder in British Columbia. The Harrop-Procter area is perfect for cross-country skiing. An alluvial fan, it has gorgeous lake views and gentle gradients for miles. Heli-skiing in the back country and around Kokanee Glacier is also available.

Five miles from the intersection of the West Arm with the main body of Kootenay Lake, Harrop Creek Cottage is accessible by a free five-minute, on-demand 24-hour-a-day ferry ride which gives the community an air of being away from it all. You can also take the longest free ferry ride in the world across the main lake to tour the East Shore with its incomparable golf courses, blacksmith shop, or yoga retreat.
Or spelunk the nearby amazing Cody Caves, investigate the Gold Rush "ghost town" of Sandon, ascend Idaho Peak for its breathtaking views and wildflower meadows, or meander through the idyllic Slocan Valley. You can soak in the hot springs at Ainsworth, hunt mushrooms, bird-watch, or just kick back on the porch of Harrop House and listen to Mill Creek as it rushes past. In late August, you can even watch the kokanee, a fresh-water salmon that turns bright red as it returns to spawn there.
